Roche is investing $400 million upfront in a partnership with Hansoh Pharma to develop cancer therapies. The deal, announced Monday, expands Roche’s collaboration with Chinese drugmakers, building on a growing trend of global pharmaceutical companies leveraging Chinese expertise. This agreement specifically focuses on antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) technology, a promising approach in cancer treatment.
Under the agreement, Roche will identify specific cancer targets, leveraging its deep understanding of oncology. Hansoh, a leading Chinese biopharmaceutical company, will then utilize its advanced ADC technology to design and develop targeted therapies. This collaborative model allows Roche to access innovative drug development capabilities while Hansoh gains access to Roche’s global reach and expertise in bringing drugs to market. This deal builds upon a previous successful partnership where Roche licensed Hansoh’s CDH17-targeting ADC for $80 million, demonstrating the value of their ongoing collaboration.
A Growing Trend in Pharma Partnerships
This Roche-Hansoh deal exemplifies a broader shift in the pharmaceutical environment. Roche’s Genentech subsidiary recently secured a similar ADC development agreement with DualityBio for $45 million upfront. AstraZeneca has also turned to a Chinese partner, CSPC Pharmaceutical, committing a substantial $1.2 billion upfront for eight programs targeting obesity and related diseases. This January 30th agreement grants AstraZeneca access to CSPC’s peptide discovery and once-monthly dosing technologies, highlighting the diverse capabilities Chinese companies bring to these partnerships. CSPC will lead the initial development of four programs through Phase I trials, with AstraZeneca taking over subsequent development and commercialization in its licensed territories.

The increasing reliance on Chinese drugmakers is reflected in industry data. In 2025, Chinese assets played a significant role in global biopharma licensing deals, accounting for 39% of deals with upfront payments exceeding $50 million, according to J.P. Morgan. This trend shows China’s emergence as a major player in drug discovery and development, offering innovative technologies and cost-effective solutions.
Deal Details and Potential Rewards
Hansoh will take the lead in the early stages of development, utilizing its ADC platform to engineer therapies and conduct global Phase Ia trials. This phase focuses on initial safety and efficacy assessments in humans. Following successful completion of Phase Ia, Roche will assume responsibility for further development in regions outside of China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, where Hansoh retains exclusive rights. This territorial division allows both companies to leverage their strengths and maximize the potential of the developed therapies.
Beyond the substantial upfront payment, Hansoh stands to gain significantly from this partnership. They will receive an additional $110 million on the deal’s first anniversary, demonstrating Roche’s commitment to the collaboration. Furthermore, Hansoh could earn over $15 billion in milestone payments tied to development, regulatory approvals, and commercial success. These milestones highlight the potential value of the therapies being developed. Additionally, Hansoh will receive royalties on future sales, ensuring ongoing financial benefits. Notably, Hansoh has the option to co-develop and co-commercialize products in the U.S., allowing them to actively participate in the world’s largest pharmaceutical market and potentially increase their share of the rewards.
